 |
What does it mean to have ADHD? You can have 1 of 2 types or a combination of both:
- ADHDinattentive
- Gets bored easily
- Loses or forgets things
- Has trouble organizing or completing tasks
- ADHDhyperactive/impulsive
- Feels like it's impossible to sit still
- Tries to do several things at once
- Speaks out at the wrong times
- ADHDcombined
- Has symptoms of both of the above
Boys with ADHD are more likely to be hyperactive/impulsive. Girls are more likely to be inattentive.
You may have just found out you have ADHD. But you may have felt like this when you were younger. Maybe you were treated for ADHD as a
child, but stopped treatment as you got older. Now as you face a new situation like college, you may need help again. This is common among
teens with ADHD. In fact, up to 80% of children diagnosed with ADHD continue to have symptoms through their teens and beyond.
Beginning the journey
Getting the right diagnosis is the first step. Before that can happen, your doctor usually talks to you and your parents. Your doctor might also talk to teachers, coaches, and others who know you well. You'll
also get a complete physical. You and your family might have to take some written tests. Just what you needmore tests, right? But don't worrythese tests are good. They'll make sure you have ADHD and not something else.
Your doctor or pediatrician may send you to a special doctor, like a behavioral psychiatrist or neurologist. This will make sure you get the best care you can.
