ADHD at School

ADHD at School

School is the most important part of your child's life. It is very important that teachers, administrators, and counselors be a part of your child's treatment plan.

Meet with your school support team—before the school year begins, if possible. Explain to everyone that your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and what this means. Then tell them about the treatment plan you have worked out. Many teachers will already know about ADHD. They might have some good ideas to add to your plan.

In the classroom

There are several things your child can do to help manage ADHD at school.
  • Sit somewhere in the classroom where he or she can see and hear the teacher without distractions
  • Ask the teacher or a classmate to help your child write
  • down his or her homework and see if he or she can get a copy of the class notes
  • Ask the teacher if he or she can get up and move around the room sometimes
  • If your child doesn't understand something, he or she should ask the teacher to repeat it
  • Ask the teacher for extra help if your child needs it

What you can do

There are several things you can do to help your child cope with ADHD in the classroom.
  • To help with a child's forgetfulness, ask if your child can have 2 textbooks—1 for home and 1 for school
  • Ask to receive advanced notice of homework assignments, and the dates of quizzes or tests
  • Organize needed everyday items like clothing, book bags, school supplies, and after school activity gear
