ADHD Information for Caregivers: Getting Started
Reassure your child that ADHD is a well-studied medical condition that a lot of other kids have as well. Make sure that he or she knows that ADHD symptoms can be managed and are nothing to be embarrassed about, and that having ADHD is not his or her fault. Tell your child that you will work together to figure out the best way to help manage his or her ADHD symptoms.
Choosing an ADHD treatment plan
Talk to your health care professional (HCP) about a plan that seems right for you and your child. While every child's needs are different, an effective treatment plan includes behavioral management, medication, a support structure, and counseling. Talk to your HCP to see if Focalin XR is right for your child.
Meet with your child's teachers and/or school counselor before the school year begins. Make them aware that your child has been diagnosed with ADHD and what that means. Then tell them about the treatment plan you and your HCP have chosen to follow. Many teachers will already know about ADHD and may have some good suggestions to add to your plan.
